My Paintings reflect a reverence for the
complexity, beauty and mood of the rural and
natural landscape. The scenes that interest me
are visually compelling and thought provoking.
I am drawn to certain compositions, patterns
of light and shadow and the contrast between
warm and cool colors. Most importantly, I am
telling the story of a particular moment in time
and hoping the viewer can find themselves in
the story.
My canvasses are prepared by layering gesso
and molding paste to create texture on the
surface before I begin painting. I then begin in
oil, building layers with the texture underneath
allowing color to show through the top layers.
The design is simplified and the colors given
more intensity to help convey the mood of
the painting.
It is interesting that when selecting a scene to
paint, I am compelled to explore it and don’t
think much about why. It is only after years of
working that I do see a theme that connects
most of my paintings.
I found they are usually about our home in the
natural environment as both observers and
inhabitants. When I paint a barn or farmhouse,
I wonder about the family inside and their story.
I have been represented by fine galleries in
Oregon and Washington and have
participated in both solo and group shows.
Among my collectors are Author, Jean Auel
and the Collins Foundation.
