About what inspires me…

I grew up spending as much time in the great
outdoors as I could, paddling leaky boats and
climbing trees on Vancouver Island. When my
family moved to eastern Canada, I pined for
British Columbia, while my memories of the
Province’s incredible beauty influenced my
drawings. After completing an education in
Fine and Applied Art at the University of Illinois
(where my instructors became accustomed to
seeing very large trees and mountains in most
of my projects…) my new husband, pets and
I moved to Portland, Oregon, where I finally
stopped being homesick for the
Pacific Northwest.

Oregon has been home for over a decade.
I love living in a place where there seems to
be more liquid in the air than in our waterways.
Rather than dreading the end of our sunny
summers, I look forward to the easy inspiration
I find in the soft air of our rainy seasons. I find
myself driven to try to capture the essence of
dripping leaves and evergreens, flooded rivers
and fields, and the filtered sunlight that
illuminates distant showers between hills. When
I’m not painting, I’m working as a kayak guide
on the lower Columbia River, introducing
others to the beauty that sends me back to
my canvas.

I hope you enjoy my latest collection of oil
paintings as much as I enjoyed
creating them!
